Registration of Schools with the Charities Regulator

The Charities Regulatory Authority (CRA) has been working in partnership with the Department of Education and Skills (DES) in an effort to facilitate the smooth registration of schools under the Charities Act 2009. The CRA have now finalised their IT systems and database with pre-populated school information from the DES.

By now, all primary schools should have received an email from the offices of the CRA outlining to them how to begin the registration process. This email contains a PIN Code necessary to create the charity account. 

If you are a primary school and did not receive an email from the Charities Regulatory Authority please submit a query through their website requesting a reissuance of the email PIN letter.  Please include school roll number and email address for your Primary School: www.charitiesregulatoryauthority.ie

The first step to create a charity Account

  1. On the charitiesregulatoryauthority.ie homepage click on “Create Charity Account”  
  2. Enter the Access PIN Code provided in the PIN email from the Charities Regulatory Authority.
  3. Enter a username – *your username must be a valid email address.
  4. Enter a password – *your password must be a minimum of 9 characters
  5. Confirm your agreement to our terms and conditions *please read the Terms and Conditions before agreeing
  6. Press the “submit” button to create your charity account

The registration process can then be completed through logging onto the CRA website and completing a simple and straight forward verification process.  As part of this registration process, schools will be asked to provide and verify information under the following sections:

  • Charity Details
    • Name, parent association, school council, date of establishment
  • Charitable Purpose
    • Charitable objectives (i.e. advancement of education)
  • Address
    • Primary address of school, correspondence address
  • Board of Management
    • Details on the current Board of Management
  • Declaration
    • Declare that the application is correct and complete
