CPSMA Welcomes Increase in Capitation Grant in Budget 2026
7th October 2025 | News, What's New
The Catholic Primary Schools Management Association (CPSMA) welcomes the announcement in Budget 2026 of a €50 increase in the capitation grant for primary schools.
This increase, while falling short of the full amount sought by primary school stakeholders, is a positive and welcome step toward addressing the underfunding of primary education in Ireland. CPSMA acknowledges the Government’s recognition of the financial pressures facing schools and appreciates this move to ease the burden on school communities.
Speaking today, CPSMA General Secretary Seamus Mulconry said:
“We welcome this increase as a sign that the Government is listening to the concerns of school leaders, parents, and boards of management. While it does not fully meet the level of funding required it is a positive step in the right direction. We will continue to advocate for sustainable, adequate funding that ensures schools can focus on teaching and learning rather than fundraising to keep the lights on.”
“I would like to thank all of the Primary Stakeholders, Management Bodies, INTO, IPPN, Forsa, and indeed St. Vincent De Paul who campaigned for an increase in capitation and particularly to Minister Helen McEntee and her officials who secured this increase in hard fought budget negotiations.”
CPSMA reiterates its call for a long-term commitment to properly fund primary education in line with the constitutional promise of free primary education for all children. The association remains committed to working constructively with the Department of Education to ensure that every child in Ireland has access to a well-resourced, inclusive, and high-quality learning environment.
