CPSMA Welcomes €5 Million Pilot Programme of Counselling and Mental Health Supports for Primary Schools

1st June 2023 | News, What's New

CPSMA welcomes the establishment of a pilot programme of counselling and mental health supports in a number of primary schools which will commence in September 2023. The pilot, taking place in Cavan, Laois, Leitrim, Longford, Mayo, Monaghan, and Tipperary aims to provide significant counselling and mental health supports for primary school-aged children.

The pilot programme is a recognition of the importance of the wellbeing of each child who attends primary school, and it aims to mitigate the mental health challenges which primary school-aged children may experience. The significant investment in this programme highlights that education is much more than developing skills or transferring knowledge; rather education encompasses the holistic development of children, with each child’s wellbeing placed at the heart of primary education.

CPSMA would like to see this programme extended to include all primary and special schools as soon as possible. For more information on the programme please visit https://www.gov.ie/en/press-release/90147-minister-for-education-announces-establishment-of-5-million-pilot-programme-of-counselling-and-mental-health-supports-for-primary/
