Celebration of St Colmcille

27th November 2020 | News, What's New

The 7th of December 2020 marks the beginning of a year of celebrations to mark the life and legacy of St Colmcille/Columba, 1500 years after his birth at Gartan in Co Donegal.

The Colmcille 1500 Committee of the Raphoe Diocese invites schools in Ireland, Scotland and beyond , especially those named after St Colmcille/Columba, to reflect on the life and faith of Colmcille/Columba and to light a candle in schools on the morning of 7th December and/or post an image of a lit candle on the school’s social media to mark the day.

If it is appropriate for your school setting, you might like to incorporate the following prayer attributed to St Colmcille/Columba in your reflection.

My Dearest Lord,
Be thou a bright flame before me,
Be thou a guiding star above me,
Be thou a smooth path below me,
Be thou a kindly shepherd behind me,
Today, tonight and forevermore.
